Role Description
The recycling of packaging films would be facilitated if they would be made of pure PE. Those films are complex products made of several layers and polymeric materials to match the stringent application requirements such as mechanical strength, barrier properties… Among them, blown films are produced by a high productive blown stretch process. Resin properties, film structure and the conditions of making the films determine their mechanical behavior upon stretching. There is currently no fundamental method to predict accurately the mechanical performance of those films straight from knowing their resing design and fabrication conditions. However, Dow has developed a set of Physics models that combined to the latest Machine Learning techniques may produce accurate predictive capability that will help Dow formulators in designing the next generation of sustainable packaging.
The student will first review the Machine Learning methods suited for this Physics-informed approach, adapt where needed Dow’s Physics based models, build a training and validation dataset from Dow’s historical data and implement the method(s) using a high level language (Julia, Python, Matlab). The outcome would be a tool which predict film tensile behavior from resin properties and fabrication conditions. Programming, Mathematical and basic statistical skills are required.
